About Stay Awake

The story behind a small tool that keeps your screen on.

Why I built it

Hi, I'm Pardeep. Stay Awake started with a small, annoying thing that kept happening to me at work.

I work across two monitors. Teams sits on my main screen, and most of my real work happens on the second one. More than once, I'd look over after a long stretch of focus and see that yellow Away status next to my name. I hadn't gone anywhere. I'd been working the whole time, just not where Teams seemed to be looking. Nobody ever said anything about it, but it bugged me. It's not a great feeling when someone messages you and your status says you've wandered off.

Then there were the other little things. I'd kick off a long test run or a big download, step away for lunch, and come back to a locked screen and a job that had quietly stopped halfway through. Or I'd be walking someone through a document on a call and the screen would dim mid-sentence. None of it was a big deal on its own. Added up, it was a lot of small interruptions in a day.

I looked at the usual fixes. There are apps for this, but I didn't want to install anything on my work laptop, and I wasn't going to buy a USB gadget that wiggles my mouse for me. I just wanted to open a tab, press a button, and get back to work.

So I made one

That's all Stay Awake is. You pick how long you need, press Let's go!, and it keeps your screen on and your computer awake until the timer runs out. Then it switches itself off. There's no account and nothing to download, and none of your information goes anywhere. Everything runs right there in your browser.

I didn't build it to help anyone fake a busy day. Most of us lose that green dot while we're doing exactly what we should be doing: reading, thinking, or waiting on something that takes a while to finish. This is for those moments.

I'll keep improving it as I use it. If it saves you from one dimmed screen or one stalled download, it's done its job.
